Clinical cases (Medical and Surgical)

Why core clinical cases?
In undergraduate medical education there is a trend towards the development of ‘core’
curricula. The aim is to facilitate the teaching of essential and relevant knowledge, skills
and attitudes. This contrasts with traditional medical school courses, where the emphasis
was on detailed factual knowledge, often with little obvious clinical relevance. In addition,
students’ learning is now commonly examined using objective structured clinical
examinations (OSCEs) which again assess the practical use of knowledge, rather than the
regurgitation of ‘small-print’.
Core cases in Medicine and Surgery cannot be an exhaustive list of all of the cases which
could be regarded as ‘core’, largely due to the massive scope of these specialties. However,
the volumes do present examples which can be used to train the reader in a realistic way
of approaching medical and surgical problems. This should help develop a learning strategy
for fifth year medical students to prepare for final examinations, as well as providing useful
revision for pre-registration house doctors taking on a new area.
